Wandering About Stony Brook
I went to Stony Brook in Norfolk this morning. I chose it rather than my standard Moose Hill because it's July and for me anyway that means Ebony Jewelwings (Calopteryx maculata). Since I didn't place a hold on a library pass to Garden in the Woods, Stony Brook was my only other choice. Other than the random sighting a few weeks ago in my own yard I've only seen these guys at Garden in the Woods, or Stony Brook.
There were 4 or 5 females (the ones with white spots on their wingtips) and one male.
I also spotted this funky caterpillar around the same spot, but he wasn't interested in posing for a picture. I got a good enough one to identify him as probably a Question Mark butterfly caterpillar.
