NYBG - Flower

Not a clue what this is, it was blooming in the Tropical pond, and I spent a bit trying to get it in detail.

Waterlily

Sioux waterlily
Possibly a Sioux flower, but I didn't trace the stalk down to the pot to be sure.  What a difference 6 months makes.  It's been in the eighties, and not a bit of snow in sight.

Forsythia Blooming

of course all I have are tiny cuttings from last year. A few look like the didn't survive the winter but two are blooming.

Notes: Outside lettuce is up and peas are just starting to come up.

Iris ‘Katherine Hodgkin’ - Just in Time for Snow

With more snow on the way I did build a jury rigged side less cold frame so I could at least drop the pot these are in under it to maybe keep them from freezing. These bloomed just a few days earlier last year and they live in a pot so i can keep track of them.

Other notes for me, Peppers and Eggplant seedlings are coming up, got to get back to building a plant stand with lights to take care of them.

End of Rain

colchicum
The colchicium bulbs from last year came up again, of course it rained on them for 4 or 5 days, so they're a little flat, but the sun was out today, and they survived the summer so I'm happy. They're going to be in the pot for at least another winter just so I can keep track. Since we're probably getting the big trees on the south side of the yard removed this fall, so I'll probably be moving plenty of plants again.

Water Lily

waterlily
A surprise water lily that bloomed last week. Obviously I should have posted it last week. I've been busy, working, not doing anything fun...

Another Unknown Purple Flower

purple flower
I expect this one is likely a common Enough greenhouse plant, but I didn't see ID. It looks almost like an orchid up close.

Purple and White Flower

purple and white flower
I found no label for this though there were a few bunches. I liked the color change it appeared to be doing.

Yellow Zinnia

yellow zinnia
This week will be highlights of my recent trip to Tower Hill. This was a much later visit for me, normally I go in May.

Pink Phlox

pink phlox
So, a number of years ago I bought one dark pink and one white garden phlox plant. The dark pink one eventually died, but the white one kept spawning seeds. Turns out the purple one cross bred at least a little. I have 4 different varieties of pink, including one with white flowers and pink centers. Above is my favorite one, but most people would pretend they were all the same.

Turk's Cap Lily

turks cap lily
The upside of having a temp job is having a job, the down side is not being in the yard during the day. The Turk's Cap Lilies have been blooming for over a week now and this was my first chance to photograph one.

Bee Balm 'Jacob Kline'

bee balm jacob kline
Nice tall red bee balm. As far as I'm concerned these herald the start of summer.

Miniature Rose

miniature orange rose
Roses aren't really my cup of tea. Mostly because I have three rose 'bushes', and all three have withered down to one stick. One is almost 4 feet tall, but again a single stalk with one flower a year from each. They aren't quite worth the space I'm providing. If I'm not going to constantly spray them for aphids they don't survive. The canker worms have also been munching their first leaves to swiss cheese so long term survival seems unlikely.

Rose Champion

rose champion
I moved lots of seedlings of these guys last year, but was disappointed none bloomed. This year all are blooming. I guess it needs some time to get some size before blooming.

Carnation Pink

carnation pink
I'm not sure exactly what variety this one is, and I may or may not have the label any more. It's pretty and it made it through the last 4 days of rain quite well. The peonies got flattened, so I needed something else to concentrate on.

peony karl rosenfeld open
Almost every bud opened this morning. Bowl of Beauty opened over the weekend.

Bearded Iris

red bearded iris
So far three different colors of bearded iris have bloomed. This one being a strange purplish red. The bud looked almost black.

Peony 'Karl Rosenfeld'

peony karl rosenfeld
I've been waiting since 2009 for this plant to finally bloom. This is what I get for being too cheap and buying plants in bags once they go on clearance. I paid $2.50 for a plant that was no where near blooming size. Blooming size plants can be had for $12.00, so I really am cheap. A peony (bowl of beauty) I got the same way a year later is also putting up a bud, one. The karl rosenfeld has a dozen or so, maybe opening next week sometime?
