Close Up Frost

Another one from a few weeks ago. This time I cropped it so the detail is a little more visible.

Linear Frosted Leaf

Last one for a bit. More frost, though of a different type. This stuff occurs near the driveway, and just dusts items, rather than covering it in fuzz.

Untouched Leaf

In one are of the yard the frost tends to crawl under items. I flipped this leaf after and the entire undersize was covered in frost, but the top was clear.

Frosty Grass

A note on scale. The longest frost is maybe 1/2" long, so this isn't a very large area at all. The whole photo is in the space of a few square inches. I'm using ambient light, a tripod, and a remote to keep the camera from shaking. the settings were a 1/2 sec shutter speed with an f stop of 13. ISO was set to 200. I tend to set the f stop and let the camera decide about the shutter speed, unless they're coming out too dark.

More Frost

Different parts of my yard grow different frost. The back near the rock wall cultivates longer frost chains and hangs around the longest since a fence shelters it from the sun.

Frosty Weekend

Saturday arrived and I didn't need to work when the frost was available. The last few weeks I'd notice we had a frost as I was rushing around trying to get to work. I have a few furtive shots I took with my point and shoot in thee five minutes lee way I have between getting up, feeding the dogs, feeding myself, getting the dogs out and back in, dressing for work and making my lunch. None of them were very good and since I didn't have time to do better I was getting frustrated. Here's the week of photos to make up for it.

Furry Frost

Frost appears in strange ways on furry plants. Strawberry leaves are covered in hairs, and the frost often only forms on the hairs.

Happy 2012

Here's a frosty lupine from the first of the new year. I keep expecting the cold to shrivel up the young lupines, but they keep hanging on.

Frost Knot

A snarly knot of frost from Monday. So much frost it's hard to tell where it begins and where it ends.

Garlic

Those extra weeks of warm weather were kind to the garden however. We just pulled up carrots I planted in August, and cut down the lettuce from in the plastic greenhouse just last week. Mom said it was all delicious since I don't eat any of it I wouldn't know. The garlic is huge, even though it was just supposed to sprout a bit before winter. It got a heavy head start. Hopefully, that won't screw up what I get out next year.

Grass with Beard

More frost from Monday. There were several very pretty patches of extensive frost. The grass almost looked as if it were trying to grow hair. I say grass, but these were leaves from muscari bulbs.

Frost and Leaf

This morning's frost was quite nice in some places. The rock wall had some very nicely grown areas due to holes between the rocks funneling cold air. I'm fighting a sore throat flu-like affliction, so missed a few posts last week.

Last Year Frost

I did go out this morning, but there wasn't much impressive in the frost. Mostly short, no where near as ornate as it was one day last year.

Frosty Milkweed

I went outside and found this pretty thing.

You may notice no word count today. My laptop ate roughly 600 words yesterday, so I finished my 2000 words, but ended up with 1400 or so actual words. I'll be filling that back up today.

Waiting for Frost

The weather is making it look like I'll be seeing frost sometime this week or weekend. The above photo is from December 2010.

Frost Stars

I did not get up early enough to hike, but I was able to scour the back yard for interesting frost. The frost on my car had melted to a ruin, but the yard had plenty of interesting shapes. Since i started using live view, the tripod, and my camera's remote I've been getting much clearer frost images. Since I only have a standard macro lens I can't get as close as I want, but until I get an MP-E 65mm that will have to do. Since I have two other lens I'd want first, buying a dedicated manual focus macro lens probably won't be happening.

I know, I know. I said I was going to do nice warm summer pics and here I did frost. This little filigree appeared on my front window this morning and I couldn't resist. I can only photograph frost in the winter, so I might as well do it now.
