Sunrise at Daniel Webster

It would be so much easier to photograph at Daniel Webster if it wasn't 45 mins from my house. I got up at 4 am. The moon looked nice. I startled plenty of deer, up close even. I even spotted two mice. Chicory was just starting to open. The path reflected in this spider web. Two more opening chicory. There were only 4 or so rabbits. (I saw more on my later walk with one of the dogs.) And begging babies rounded out my walk. Then I walked a dog and crashed for 3 more hours of sleep...

Meandering in Moose Hill

This morning I got out there and made it to Moose Hill shortly after the parking lot opened, or at least when I thought the parking lot opened. It was open, but full of construction vehicles, as Moose Hill is adding onto their building with new bathrooms and the like. My first thought was sure I guess the tiny bathroom wasn't really enough. My next was depressing though. All the gardens, the side wildlife one, and the ones in front of the building were gone, dug out for new foundation walls. I'm really hoping someone dug out their plants before construction began. I actually sent an e-mail to ask about it bothered me so much. They had some gorgeous bearded irises and it will be a real shame if no plant nut dug them up. That thought kind of soured my walk. Today, I was again greeted by the moon. I've been doing a tiny bit of obsessing about celestial stuff recently, and about how it's almost impossible in my geographical location to see the moon wane. It does most of it during the day, so you can only seem to see it early morning or early evening if it's up at all. I do keep attempting water on leaves, but the narrow depth of field keeps killing me. I even hauled the tripod along, but it's such a pain to attach to I rarely use it. I found these guys just like this. They were barely in the sun, and I took a ton of pictures because every time I paused and checked I was getting the leaf in focus but not the leaf hoppers. It turns out my second image was focused quite well.

What a difference a day makes

This week there was a nice alignment of several celestial bodies. The moon, Venus, and Jupiter appeared very close together (to our eyes.) If you were in the southern hemisphere I believe it even looked like a smiley face. Next time you'll be able to see it is in 2052.

Daylight Savings Time and the Night

I loathe Daylight Savings Time. Unlike, I guess a large majority, I don't have to get up early. I get up around 8, and get home from work around 5. I was perfectly happy with the sun coming up around 8, because it meant I didn't have to commute home in the dark every freaking day. I hate driving in the dark. Everyone drives slower, can't see as well, and the whole thing makes me nervous. So to compensate I go directly home from work leaving me with huge amounts of time to fill with something. Even if I go anywhere after work I still feel like I need to get home because it's dark... To make it more fun, neither of my dogs can read a clock, for about two weeks I get to wean their dinner time back to something normal. And they still want to go out an hour earlier now in the morning. This is the light levels if I'm lucky when I get out of work.

It got cloudy last night, but I got to play with the full moon a little with long exposures.

Waxing Gibbous 96% full 10/12/08 11:52 pm Took a number of pictures. Turns out an almost full moon is pretty bright. Ended up at 1/250 sec. Anything much longer turned into a white blob. This was handheld on the S3, Focus set to infinity, Image Stabilization set to off...
