Turk's Cap Lily Roots

Well, it's not pretty, but I dug up a dozen or more of them today. I also managed to drag out a stump which has been the bane of the garden for a few years, but the Turk's Cap roots were more interesting. There were three times as many as I expected, and they ranged from about 6 inches deep to right on the surface. I transplanted them to three new places about 4 inches deep, and tried to keep them a little crowded so they will hopefully bloom this year. I potted up a few of the smallest roots just so I can keep a closer eye on them. The one pictured above is one of the smaller ones and went in a pot. The garden is maybe 70% to where I want it. I still have a few plants to move, a large spirea comes to mind, and now that I have more space I need to finish the new pond.

Lupine

My cousin called these the hand plants at my back door last weekend. I'm quite happy that all my 2 year old lupines seem to have survived the winter. They all also need to be re-potted or planted out soon. They don't seem to mind the chilly weather we've been having. As you can see for a bit I was wedging them in the cinder blocks.

Hens and Chicks

I wish this was about avian chicks. This is from a plant that has been hanging on for two years now in a pot. I bought it planning to put it in one section of the rock wall, and just keep not getting to it before fall. The 4" pot sits in a convenient corner of the garden and the plants just keep waiting. The largest rosettes died quite some time ago and the babies keep spilling out of the pot. I do nothing to protect it, but it keeps surviving the winter quite well.
